Outline of Project

Cadogan Consultants is acting for the two principal parties in a Community Energy Project in Edinburgh which will use waste heat from an industrial site to provide all of the heating requirements for a housing development.

The housing development comprises 120 low-rise houses which were completed in 2000. It is a sustainable housing development with many ecologically friendly and energy efficient features. Heating is currently provided from a central boilerhouse and as such it will be straightforward to utilise the waste heat from the nearby industrial site.

Heating costs are already low for tenants but the industrial neighbour is prepared to make its waste heat available to the housing scheme for no charge. The advantage to the industrialist is reduced costs for disposing of the heat and improved community relations. Funding arrangements are still to be finalised but it is likely that within a few years of installation the residents will get their heating free paying a small maintenance charge only.

This Community Energy project is therefore unique and requires only the installation of district heating mains, pumps, heat exchangers, etc. to transfer the heat between the heat source and the heat sink and to facilitate this it is intended to use the route of a railway track which runs between the two sites. No significant modification works are required at either the housing development or the industrial site.

The project is located in a mixed residential, commercial and industrial area of Edinburgh and recent redevelopments have tended to be residential. Future developments (and one residential development in particular) may take advantage of the free heat also.
